A new analysis of pictures taken by the exploration rover Opportunity reveals what appear to be small ponds of liquid water on the surface of Mars.

The article goes on to say the expected – that this vastly increases the likelyhood of finding life on Mars.

Um… it’s more than a little premature to tout this kind of discovery. Very premature.

By Monday (today, as I type), the story is most throughly debunked by Emily Lakdawalla, over at the Planetary Society’s Weblog.

I expressed some qualms about New Scientist earlier.
