Messenger At Mercury

Yesterday occured the fly-by of Mercury by the Messenger spacecraft.

Oooohhh – I’m channelling Yoda, backwards, talking. We’ll try again.

Yesterday, the Messenger spacecraft flew by Mercury. This is far from the end of the mission. In fact, it’s barely the beginning. Messenger has yet to start it’s job, because it has not yet shed enough velocity to let Mercury’s gravity capture it in a safe orbit. That won’t occur until 2011.

Once again, Emily Lakdawalla at the Planetary Society does a marvelous job following the events at APL (this time, long distance).
