McCain – Thompson

You’ve already seen it in Instapundit, but The Washington Post reports that Fred Thompson has endorsed John McCain for president.

As much as would like to think so, I hardly think this is the dream ticket for the Republicans. Thompson brings with him much of the conservative base, but guarantees no states except Tennessee and maybe Arkansas. Against Barack Obama, that won’t be enough.

McCain may be compelled to have a woman or an African-American on the ticket, and if Condolessa Rice is available, make that “or” an “and”. She isn’t, however. I suspect both Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and Maryland’s Michael Steele (he ran an excellent campaign for Governor in 2006) are under consideration.

But what do I know? I’m not a political operative. I just play one on the internet.
