Teaching Climate Change

A Silicon Valley lawmaker is gaining momentum with a bill that would require “climate change” to be among the science topics that all California public school students are taught. The measure, by state Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, also would mandate that future science textbooks approved for California public schools include climate change.

When I taught Astronomy to college freshman I had to start with “The Sun rises in the east, and sets in the west”. Most did not know that the Moon could be seen in the daytime, and several had not even seen a star, much less a planet. And this was thirty years ago.

There’s a technical term for what this lawmaker is doing. It’s called a waste. California would be better off mandating courses in Intelligent Design. That would certainly do less harm.
