Big East and The Bubble

March MadnessMaybe you’ve heard it before, but there’s a basketball tournament going on?  Actually, right now, there are several, as each conference in the NCAA puts on its own.  The winners are guaranteed to go to the big show, of course, and the remainders are vying for one of the 65 spots.  Yes, that’s a lot of teams, and it really, really takes a non-competitive program to not make it into the NCAAs nowadays.

The Big East, however, this time lead by The Georgetown Hoyas, is always one of the premier conferences.  It certainly is again this year.  According to the early predictions at Sports Illustrated (okay, just one at SI by Stewart Mandel), the Big East could send as many as 9 teams to the show, more than any other conference.

On Wednesday, my team, The Villanova Wildcats (19-11 overall and 9-9 in the Big East), meet The Syracuse Orangemen (19-12 overall, 9-9 in the Big East).  Yes, evenly matched.  The loser will probably not be in the Tourney.  The winner might or might not be, depending on how they do in the following game, which will probably be against the Hoyas.  Keep in mind, though, that earlier this year, Georgetown barely squeaked by Villanova at the last moment, thanks to a controversial call by the refs with less than a second left in the game.
