Villanova Lives

Villanova BasketballGonzaga’s defeat on Monday night at the hands of San Diego and Western Kentucky’s surprise win make the odds just a little smaller that 9 teams from the Big East were going to go to the NCAA Tournament. It became that much more important for Villanova to beat Syracuse in today’s early game. Villanova prevailed, 82-63. According to SI’s Stewart Mandel

Syracuse is headed back to the NIT for a second straight year — only this time it won’t have to wait until Sunday to find out. Villanova’s 82-63 Big East quarterfinal rout of the Orange on Wednesday dashed any remaining tourney hopes for Syracuse while bolstering the Wildcats’ chances. Though not out of the woods for sure, ‘Nova (No. 57 RPI) has now won six of its past eight and can boast five wins against top 50 foes. Not many other bubble types can say that.

The invitation is still not a sure thing, but a good game against #1 ranked (in the Big East) Georgetown in the next round will certainly help.

[edit – The game will be played Thursday at noon EDT.]

Tonight’s games can be followed here IRT, if you’re away from your TV set, that is.
