He’s Embarrassed For You
Senator Obama Is
It’s embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe and all we can say is merci beaucoup,
Interesting quote, that. I hadn’t noticed, particularly, that immigrants to this country were amazingly fluent in English, to a man. And my good friend, Bob McCutcheon (a New Jersey boy, also Yale Astronomy circa 1971), would be surprised to learn that his Russian friends don’t understand him.
But that’s a quibble. What is really important about Sen, Obama’s little statement is the Kerryesque elitism. Ed Morrissey hits the nail squarely.
The study of foreign language not only broadens one’s cultural perspective, but it also helps in understanding one’s native tongue. However, to argue that Americans should learn Spanish as a higher priority than insisting that immigrants learn English is nonsense, and Obama’s argument for it is a giant non-sequitur. It carries a strong whiff of America-bashing, too.
The Anchoress is – how shall I put this? – rather ticked at the Senator too, with good reason.
Is America perfect? No, far from it, but I’m damned sure we are not so awful, so pathetic, so ignorant and backward that a presidential candidate needs to get up on stage and jeer at his country and countrymen for their lack of so-called sophistication to his “sophisticated” and self-hating supporters.
Yeah – we noticed the insult. Why is Obama and so many of his entourage coming off like that – elitist with arrogance added for good measure? I mean, that’s just poor politics.
