The Wall Has Come Down

No, No. Not THAT Wall

It’s been much reported (don’t you love that subjunctive elocution?) that the consensus of scientists who agree about the existence of anthropological global warming is crumbling.

The American Physical Society, an organization representing nearly 50,000 physicists, has reversed its stance on climate change and is now proclaiming that many of its members disbelieve in human-induced global warming. The APS is also sponsoring public debate on the validity of global warming science. The leadership of the society had previously called the evidence for global warming “incontrovertible.”

Patterico at Patterico’s Pontifications has it right when he says:

Does this mean anthropogenic global warming is a fraud? Of course not. It just means that those who tell you with supreme confidence that there is only one side to the issue are wrong.

It’s that very “supreme confidence” that should tell the observer that something’s amiss, especially when science is concerned. There’s simply nothing in legitimate science that can’t be undone – disproven – tomorrow. If it can’t, it’s not legitimate science.

And to believe otherwise is to make two fundamental mistakes. The first is to mistake your religion for a science. The second is to confuse arrogance with certainty.

Related, to see the sunspot activity on the date of this post, click on the picture for a much larger view. Daily sunspot pictures and archives can be found here. We’re nowhere near replicating the Maunder Minimum, yet. But the lack of activity has given me pause.

And now a word from our sponsor.  Sorry that blogging has been so light as of late.  Busy, you know.  If driving a 12 cylinder car is something that every man should do once before dieing, then working on government proposals is something to which no living man should be subjected.
